As an event photographer in Utrecht, I had the privilege to photographed CyberSec at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht, one of the leading venues for large-scale business events and trade shows in the Netherlands.


In this article, I’ll break down my workflow and share practical event photography tips that help deliver strong, marketable images, especially applicable for corporate events, exhibitions, and conferences. Phase 2: Visitor Interaction & Energy

Once visitors arrive, it's game time. The fun spotting radar system in my mind gets turned on. And I got ook for people doing business, having professional fun, and radiating the right energy.

Pro-tip! -> You get when you radiate. If you are in a good mood, you will also spot more people that are in a good mood!


  • Look for authentic interactions

  • Avoid staged photos

  • Capture real conversations and engagement


💡 Pro tip: Always check the event schedule so you don’t miss key moments like speakers or product demos.


🎤 Phase 3: Speakers & Content Capture

These images are highly valuable for indirect event marketing. When a well known speaker posts about their talk at an event. This is very good marketing for the event. At CyberSec, the stage lighting was excellent, making speaker photography easier.


Focus on:

  • 💡 Clean lighting

  • 🎯 Facial expressions & gestures

  • 📍 Context (screens, branding, audience)

💡Pro-tip: Always try to focus on the slide and background of the speaker. If you can include this into the frame. You're winning when it comes to story telling.


🎯 Phase 4: Incorporating the Event Theme

For your trade show client, it's important to receive pictures that tell the complete story of their event. The difference between a photographer, and a professional trade show photographer. Is that a professional knows how to create pictures that tell the complete story their client is looking for. And you do that by including the theme in as much frames as possible. Let me give you an example.


CyberSec is all about cybersecurity, so my visuals should reflect that.

Look for:

  • Screens with code or data

  • Tech-focused visuals

  • Digital environments

💡Pro-tip: Focus on training your composition adjustment engine. Ask yourself just before you take a picture. What can I change in my composition to make this a better picture?


🧲 Phase 5: Spotting Eye-Catchers

Every trade show has standout booths. When the trade show or event organization is your client. It's smart to understand that they also have clients that pay to be there. Without them, I won't be able to be hired as their event photographer. So It's smart to take pictures of the booths that I call "Eye-catchers" These companies have invested in a lot of money to be at this event. So they deserve to be put in the spotlight with your photography. These are often the most used images by clients. Because this also creates value in the eyes of their potential next editions visitors.



Identify:

  • Large or visually striking stands

  • Unique branding

  • Interactive installations

💡Pro-tip: When shooting a booth at a trade show. Keep the lines straight. I like to use a monopod.


🥂 Phase 6: Networking & Closing Moments

The final phase is all about atmosphere. This is the moment where all the hard work comes together. A moment of celebration. So it should also feel like that and radiate that energy in your photography!



Focus on:

  • 🍻 Celebrations

  • 🤝 Handshakes

  • 😄 Genuine smiles

💡Pro-tip: Use the no-looky method to "stage" moments that don't feel staged. 🥂
